I, too am having this issue on Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit). Liked the demos and the promise that this tool may have, but I'm wondering about the support at this point since it's been a month since Brendon said he would look at this.

Is GUIDE being actively supported and improved?

Hello everyone.

Some days ago i have seen that im able to use guide for personal or open source projects free. That a good decision, i think. Thanks for that. :)

But i noticed some things ...

1. Guide freeze if i want to see my result (after clicking on the eye button).
-> im a win7 pro 32bit user with java6u21

2. I wanted to use SwingX comp. and SubstanceLAF. If i add the jars to classpath and press close, it takes some time and the ui freeze. I think guide wants to load the comp. for drag'n'drop experiences, yes? Maybe you can show a simple progressbar to show the user what is happening.

3. I tried to build a gui like mozilla thunderbird (only the look), but it is really hard to tell guide "that panel is the statusbar" or "this comp. should go from a to b". I know that this is a problem related to layoutmanagers, but i tried all of them. ;)

4. I wanted to create a new palette that contains the SwingX comp. Why is the dialog for that in the project view? I think if someone wants to design gui he/she dont want to add all needed jars for each project again. An option for a cross-project way to add external jars for every project would be nice. Same for palettes.

5. There is no option to set standard properties of the comp. in these palettes. :-/

6. If i want to delete a comp., but this comp. is hidden by some other comp. i wanted to do so in property dialog of the parent comp., but guide tells me, that it cant delete it. Why?

With best regards
CroniD

Thanks. Guide is a nice tools and I'm little confused with this problem. If you'll need any additional info or full log, I always glad to help. May be you'll just introduce a capability to change L&F from Guide's settings?

Hi. Sorry for the delay ingetti g back to you, buy I'm the one who looks at forum post and I'm on holiday at the moment. This looks to be and error within the Gtk look and feel. This doesn't mean we won't fix the problem, we can get Guide to work around the problem. I'll have a look at this and hopefully have a solution in a few days time.

Yes.  You are 100% correct.

But we love the name GUIDE, partly because it's an acronym while not being a backronym. And the logo sucks. Our application icon has grown on me, but for some reason it doesn't integrate well into the web site look and feel. I did at one point engage the services of a graphic designer, but I obviously failed to express my desires specifically enough as nothing has yet stood out to the point where i know "this is it!".

Regards,
Brendon.

Normally, GUIDE can do this without any problems. For example, using a MigCalander directly from a Jar file is possible. But it's a bit more tricky with MacWidgets.

I'm a big fan of Ken's work on MacWidgets. But aside from creating a beautiful Mac experience in Swing, he also decided to take on Swing's component pattern. Normally in Swing, when you want to create a custom component, you extend from JComponent and override some methods to customize the behaviour. GUIDE seamless handles these types of extensions.

MacWidgets takes a different approach. For example, SourceList doesn't extend anything. It isn't even a real component; rather, it contains a component. I think what the author was trying to achieve was to expose only the API that was relevant to source lists.

Unfortunately, this pattern is so unusual in Swing that it's difficult for GUIDE to support it like most components. There are two ways you can use MacWidgets in GUIDE, but I'm going to focus on the best way. Normally (the way I use GUIDE), I create components from the palette and, if I need to, I can inject references to them in my controller via setter methods. But in this case, we do it the other way around. Our controller will create the MacWidget and expose the component through a getter.

For example:

import com.explodingpixels.macwidgets.SourceList;
import com.explodingpixels.macwidgets.SourceListCategory;
import com.explodingpixels.macwidgets.SourceListItem;

import javax.swing.*;

public class Controller {
private SourceList sourceList = new SourceList();

    public Controller() {
SourceListCategory categoryA = new SourceListCategory("Network");
SourceListCategory categoryB = new SourceListCategory("Local");

        sourceList.getModel().addCategory(categoryA);
sourceList.getModel().addItemToCategory(new SourceListItem("Printer"), categoryA);
sourceList.getModel().addItemToCategory(new SourceListItem("Router"), categoryA);
sourceList.getModel().addItemToCategory(new SourceListItem("FileServer"), categoryA);

        sourceList.getModel().addCategory(categoryB);
sourceList.getModel().addItemToCategory(new SourceListItem("Home"), categoryB);
sourceList.getModel().addItemToCategory(new SourceListItem("Music"), categoryB);
sourceList.getModel().addItemToCategory(new SourceListItem("Pictures"), categoryB);

    }

    public JComponent getSourceListComponent() {
return sourceList.getComponent();
}
}

You can then drag the SourceList's component directly out of the controller and lay it out as a normal component. Please note that GUIDE is meant to prevent you from editing these components, but I've just noticed that it's doing it in this case. Bug fix to follow.

Hi,

More information would be very useful. After dropping a property onto a menu item, you should get a popup binding dialog. Do you see that? And does your controller have property change support? Is it a property with just a getter, or does it have a setter as well?

What would also help is attempting do it again, and then selecting Help -> Report problem. This will send us the log file which would tell us if any exception occurred.

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the feedback. We hope you do get attached :)

We're haven't made a price point decision yet, so I can't give you a definitive answer. But we are aware of the market in which we operate, and I'm sure we'll be priced below our primary competition. We'll let everyone know when we release.

Keep the feedback coming,

Great work! First, I'm not a professional programmer; however, programming is embedded in my job function and I'm always looking for paradigms that fit my 'thought processes'. Guide is such a product and I'm very excited to see how it develops out. Second, I have never given any feedback on any products that I use, so kudos! Third, I'm curious as to the price range you guys are going to be targeting, that way, if it's too high I know not to get to attached...ha! Irrespective of price, once again, thanks for making such a great product and as I delve deeper I'll endeavor to keep giving feedback.

Cheers,
Kevin

Hi Ian,

I'll add this to our internal issue database. Your suggested solution to the problem is exactly how we'd solve the problem. I'm not sure where this feature fits in our list of priorities. When we started with GUIDE, our intention was that the archives would be something the user never had to worry about. In fact, we initially saved them in XML.

But as the product evolved and we switched to Java, we did find ourselves being more and more chuffed with our ever improving code-generation algorithm. Maybe we can get this in for version 1.0.

Thanks for the feedback.

Regards,
Brendon McLean.

Hi,

First off let me say I really like what I've seen so far! This looks like the first UI builder that I may actually end up using.

Now, my request: there doesn't seem to be a way to name the local variables used in the generated code, renaming them outside of GUIDE means that my names just get discarded the next time I make a change in GUIDE. At first I thought that it was a compiler thing but I have checked to make sure the local variable table attribute is being generated.

Another request: in the component property inspector (bottom right) it doesn't show the "name" property.

I'm mainly mentioning this as it may be possible to link the 2 (assuming that it's a ton of work to support local variables via the LVT). I'd like an option of using the component name as the local variable name, it makes sense for GUIDE to enforce a uniqueness constraint on the component names anyway, so this would ensure that there are no name collisions in the created method, and adding a few
component.setName("foo")
calls wouldn't clutter up the generated code too much.

Cheers,
Ian.

Haven't had a chance to play around yet, but the screen-cast looks very good.

Just a minor bug I've noticed is that the link for the documentation on GUIDE's welcome screen is broken (http://www.mindsilver.com/docs/index.php should be http://www.mindsilver.com/guide/docs/index.php).

This certainly looks a lot better than Matisse in Netbeans :)

Mikhael,

Thanks for the words of encouragement. We're definitely going to be giving MigLayout a look. We were trying to focus on getting one layout manager "right" for the first release, but ultimately aim to support as many as we can handle. FormLayout has been a joy to use, but we're always looking at how we can improve. Most noticeably absent from FormLayout is baseline support, so it makes sense for us to look at your layout next.

We'll give you a shout when there's something to play with.

Thanks again,
Brendon McLean.

Hi Michael,

I am really sorry that I didn't get back to you sooner. I had no idea that bbPress doesn't send email notifications so I've just assumed that people have been preferring email over the forums (which makes me think, how will you ever know that I've replied to this?).

GUIDE can use any components with certain restrictions. Components should:

Have a no-arg constructor.

Be available on the classpath (with any dependencies they need to run)

Ideally, it should sensible defaults so it paints something visible and has a decent preferred size

To use something inside a JAR file, first make sure that GUIDE is aware the JAR file in Project Settings. If it is, you should see you JAR file appear in the project browser on the left. You can simply drag the constructor of the component onto your palette.

Sorry again for the late reply

I will admit, I haven't tested it yet but I have seen the whole video and it look amazing.

Have you thought about MigLayout support? It resembles FormLayout but is more powerful. It even have a special IDE support .jar

Cheers,
